Creating a Safe Home Environment for Loved Ones with Alzheimer’s

Numbers for Alzheimer’s and dementia are at an all-time high and show no signs of wavering in the future. If you have someone living in your home that has either disease, you may have noticed that actions and behaviors caused by memory loss go further beyond what’s initially expected. Luckily, there are a few things that can be done to minimize these challenges.

1.       Reducing Clutter

Random objects lying around can create challenges for a few different reasons. It can cause distractions that interrupt a daily schedule, tripping/falling, and increased confusion when looking for something.

2.       Keeping Unsafe Objects Hidden or Out of Reach

This will help reduce injury risks.

3.       Keep Blinds and Curtains Shut at Night

As the disease progresses, wandering and seeing people or objects that aren’t there, and sundowners may come with it. When it becomes dark, close curtains and blinds in the home. Looking out into the darkness can trigger worry, sadness, the need to see what’s outside, etc.

4.       Handles and Hand Rails

The use of these throughout the home (especially in bathrooms/showers) creates safety and support that can prevent falls and injuries.

5.       Safety in the Kitchen

Cooking and other activities that previously seemed to be no issue can become one quickly when there is a risk of leaving the stove-top burners, oven, or other kitchen appliances on. This can also apply to curling irons and other household items. Invest in safety knobs for the oven to reduce the risk of this happening and be sure to be around when all of these items are being used.

6.       In-Home Support

There are facilities that cater to memory care and can provide safe environments for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s, but many people and their families dream of growing old and living at home with their loved ones. An in-home caregiver can provide companionship, respite care, meal preparation, etc. to help you feel at ease when a little more assistance is needed.
